Regardless of what your investment interests are, you always need to be educating yourself. Whether you're creating a self-directed retirement portfolio or looking to gain more knowledge about traditional stock market investing, you always need to stay up to date.

So here's my investment "toolbox" that hopefully you'll find informative, unbiased and very useful for years to come. Enjoy!
I'm a big advocate of investor financial education. Not only today, but through out your entire life. Why is that? Well, because financial markets change over time. What worked twenty or thirty years ago, might not be as successful today. On the other hand, some financial concepts will always stand the test of time. Therefore, you need to have some rational basis for how you'll make your financial decisions.

But whatever you do, don't take the naive approach and bury your head in the sand and think everything will all work out in the end (We just witnessed this recently in the Bernard Madoff scandal). Am I suggesting that you return to school and get an MBA in Finance? No. But if you devote some energy to learning about different investment strategies, how investments work together (or not) and learn about all your investment options, you'll at least be able to sleep at night. Because after all, it is your money.

Unrelated Business Income Tax: Have you heard of this tax called "The Unrelated Business Income Tax" but had no idea of what it was? No worries. Most professionals don't know about it either, but they are usually the first ones to tell you to stay away from any IRA investment that may have the Unrelated Business Income Tax.

Food for thought -

Before you make ANY investment (self-directed IRA investment in real estate or a taxable investment in a mutual fund - it doesn't matter) educate yourself!!! There's no shame in sitting on the investment "sidelines" being invested in cash/CD's/money market accounts while you educate yourself. And don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

There isn't a worse feeling than making an uniformed financial decision (or having someone convince you to make one). Know what you own and know why you own it!
