I get many questions that start with "I'm leaving my job at Macrosoft soon. What types of retirement accounts can I move my existing 401(k) funds into?"
So I regularly use a wonderful chart that the IRS publishes that shows what retirement accounts you can move to and from. Just start on the left hand column and locate the type of retirement account you currently have. Then read across the chart and you'll discover all the types of retirement accounts that you can move your existing funds into.
Keep in mind that some types of retirement accounts like a 401(k) plan require that you have a "trade or business" to even open a 401(k) plan. But assuming you qualify for a particular type of retirement account, this chart is very useful. Click here to view.
